Low Resolution Model and 3D Tweaks

As the character development process goes, many details keep changing by various factors. The major change is during the 2D to 3D transformation. Lots of joints were needed to spotted on their exact spots and some weren’t look even close to the old design. And some of them were made as a ‘still’ model; therefore, I need to redo it to give most capability for actions.

Analysis

Brief:

We have discussed about the look of the finish piece of work, and the result is that we will have a futuristic kitchen with rough textured characters. The environment will have geometric look with bold color and smooth texture with clean lines as inspired by Bauhaus style and Monster Inc. In order to complement the style and make the character stand out, we will give all the characters rough textures with subtle tones and geometric shapes.

Break Down:

Line

We found that the line is distracting, but we will use some thick lines as paint strokes to emphasize the lighting and volume of characters. By doing so, the image may look a little like oil paint or thick acrylic paint with textures.

Tone

We are trying to stick with the idea of contrasting imagery between the background and the characters. The Tone of this animated piece of work will be stand out comparing to the room’s color.

Texture

There will be 2 types of texture: background and character. For background it will be fine and smooth to give a feel of futuristic and modern design. The character’s texture will be totally different: rough and uneven depending on the details on each part.

Shape

Our design is based on organic objects and references although the theme is a bit robotic. This way, there are chances to create unique silhouettes

Scale

The animation work will be done in half HD format (1280×720 pixel). The sketches and paintings are done in A5 and A4.

Contrast

We will use subtle contrast based on the realism of a scene. This is meant to balance out the feel of futuristic and bring back convincing and touchable feeling into the scene.

Color

We experimented some color mix and matches to find the one that fits the most, but in the end we are relying on complementary colors. Usually, we will use 2 sets of complementary colors for a shot or scene.

Artist References

For the environment of the room, we based our design on the theme of Bauhaus and neat contemporary decorations. The color choice and impression for the room were sketched out over and over:  ‘white room’ concept, tile room, abstract decorated room, white room with saturated monotone color, and white room with saturated complementary colors. Finally, we decide to use orange with tinted blue walls.

While we were trying out medium to work with, I found a website of an artist named Eric Greene. He works mainly with oil-pastel, which his lighting is attractive to me. His lighting in his paintings mostly are dramatic with vivid color. His line is simple and sometimes crisp. Because of his medium choice, the texture looks rough, yet some parts are detailed. His shapes are organic because of his works are mainly observing painting (Greene, 2012).

After a while Art came up with Monet style. Oscar-Claude Monet was one of the most famous impressionist artists. His artworks are mostly painted with oil paint on canvas. The style he illustrated has crisp line caused by the brushstroke, dramatic lighting from real-life observing, and rough texture. Most of his paintings were painted with analogous colors, but the tone varies from muted to contrasting depending on individuals (Complete Works, 2012).

As some more experimental sketches were drawn and painted digitally, we end up with a style of a contemporary artist named Samantha French. Her ‘swimmer’ paintings were compellingly inspiring. She leaves hard brushstrokes creating rough textures on her paintings. She illustrates visible refraction by using dramatic contrast with uneven saturation. Due to her painting subject, the movement in most images is floating (French, 2012).

Bottom Line

In the class yesterday, our classmates voted for the story that we will be working on. And the majority says “TEST”.

So… you can look forward too see more and more robotic designs and 3D models.

V’s Sketch

The Character:

Here are some images for characters from my sketchbook

Because the characters are twins in the opposite colors, I try to make the design simple and fit the actions that that it need to be doing.

alien sketches

I started with slimy creature and then ended up with a creature with long limbs that has elephant-like skin.

The long limbs idea is inspired by Preta.

Bio
Name: Radcer de Helix N.
Race: Helix N. inhabitant
Age: immeasurable with earthling’s technology
Blood type: pH=12 (the sampling basically ruins the testing machine)
Inhaling element: Hydrogen (a few atom would keep him alive for hours)
Breeding1: Mating with a female of his own race
Breeding2: The female will lay an egg and leave. They let the egg to hatch on its own.
Attitude: Curious, Soloist, and Adaptive

Radcer was captured unconscious in a spaceship wreck in an area of the Milky Way Nebulae near the solar system. He has been in hibernation mode for years. It was so long that earthling scientists tried to perform many experiments with him, but his skin is so “textury” and as hard as diamond. A few months after he was found, the scientists managed to inject needle into his skin with their nano-tech needle with enhanced diamond-edged needle. His blood is destructive “base” at pH of 12. Surely… the scientists had a hard time stopping the bleeding issue. After series of failure experiments, Radcer was put in a special cell that is one of the new experiment series (Intelligence). It took years to wait for him to wake up. And now… he finally opens his eyes!

Helix Nebula

The Setting:

The room will be somewhat like a cube in half black and half white. It’s in human’s base on a moon of Uranus.

These reference images can show how it might look like, but there will be different lighting, such as dim white light on the ceiling and LED wires on the floor.

LED wire will be set on between tiles on the floor.

Art’s Treatment – TEST

Brief: A small memory based robot is sent by humans to overcome a chamber full of dangerous obstacles controlled by an egoistically mad testing computer.

Full: Within the darkness of an eerie chamber coded KTCN-101, a testing computer labeled “Main” stands motionless in hibernation. Suddenly the security alarm sounds as the room is colored by flashing red lights. “Main” activates, looking around for the cause of the alarm and switches on the lights within the room one by one. What is revealed is an average looking room with ceramic flooring and flowery wallpaper.

1930s music begins to play from speakers in each corner of the room.

In this room there is a door labeled EXIT under “Main”, whilst on the other side was a rusty looking old pipe coming out of the ceiling.

Loud banging sounds of colliding metal comes from the pipe and drops out a small polished metal egg-like object with badly written white text, numbering it “01”. The metal egg stands upright and suddenly pops cleanly midway revealing eyes inside of it’s body. Arms then follow with claw on one side and hand on the other. Legs also pop out from the lower shell as the robot fully transforms out of it’s compactness into it’s true form. It pulls out it’s antennae and scans the area by rotating it back and forth.

“Main” looks with cold eyes as it monitors the robot’s movements and analyzes it to find that the small robot is completely harmless. “Main” grins with it’s electronic panel and waits patiently for the small robot to make it’s first move, preparing to trigger a few of it’s switches.

The small robot number “01” scans and finds the exit on the other side of the room, then thoughtlessly begins his strides towards the location.

“Main” monitored “01” like a hawk, waiting for the perfect moment and triggers a switch.

The ceiling opens up and drops down an electric pressure cooker, breaking it and flattening “01” in the process. “Main” bursts out in amusement flashing his electronic teeth in sync with his laughs.

Suddenly more banging sounds from the pipe could be heard. It was another metal egg. The egg was exactly the same from the one before, however this time the white text on it was numbered “02”. The egg transforms again followed by a voice saying “Data update complete”.

“02” scans the room, finding “01”’s destroyed remains under the pressure cooker and begins to calculate the source. The clues from the pressure cooker led towards “Main”. “02” begins to walk, this time being more careful than before, getting past the pressure cooker and pressing onwards. “Main” slightly amused by “02”s effort, triggers another switch and drops down a few hanging turrets from the ceiling. “02” sees the turrets and witnesses that they are actually toasters. Toast starts firing out of turrets wit tremendous force. “02” quickly dodges the impact of the rock solid toast, shattering the ceramic tiles next to it, “02” begins to retreat and turns itself back into it’s egg form. “Main” fires another piece of toast which hits “02”, sending it flying back to where it started. The overheated toasters are drawn back towards “Main”, who blows the steam out with it’s fans.

“02” having been shot back to where it was started, analyzes the situation and calculates a solution. It looks at the broken pressure cooker and then sees “Main” preparing to fire another round of toasts.  “02” runs towards the pressure cooker and rips off lid using it as a shield to deflect the toasts back at the turrets and destroying them, to only be obstructed by another obstacle, an oven.

After numerous obstacles and numerous efforts of trial and error, the small robot witnesses a strange wire along the ceiling and the walls. It follows the wire, leading it back to where it started. There was a electricity plug connected to a power outlet. It scans the wire to find that it is connected to “Main” and is “Main”s only source of power. It pulls on the plug and everything shuts down apart from the small robot.

The small robot then strides towards the exit and pulls on the door lever. The door opens and the sound of “freedom” can be heard.

V’s Treatment

Brief:
“A being tries to get out from a cell, but his reflection is going against him.”

Full:
It’s a cubic room, which is divided into two sides: black and white with a door attached to a hand scanner-pad on each side of the room. On each side, there is a biped being with a long neck and a small head. They have one eye, three fingers and two toes. Surely, one of them is black and the other is white, which is opposite from the room color. The black one walks to the door and place his hand one the scanner-pad. “ACCESS DENIED!” it’s showed on the black screen above the door. “50%” is shown on the screen after the first message disappeared. The same happens with the white one. Then the white one walks toward the middle of the room with curiosity, and so does the black one. The black one seems to be surprised by the white’s movement. The black one then reaches his hand, and so does the white. They are just like reflection of each other. They made hand contact. The colors seem to be blending together finger-to-finger. The white one looks at the black one head to toe and looks up again then stops at the hand contact. Surely, the black does the exact same motion. They are nervous to see the change in color, so they suddenly pull their hands back. The black looks at his stained right hand worryingly. The grayish white liquid slowly wears off his right hand. Quite the same thing happens to the white one who has a dark grayish stained left hand. They look up at each other and take a few steps backward. After a deep breath, they ran toward each other at full might. CRASH! They both bounced off and fall on the floor. They get up and stare at each other and started to dance. They perform the same dance. After a few seconds, they stop and then look at each other while they are grasping for breath. After a while, the white one walks in circle to his right thinking hard. Meanwhile, the black is walking in circle to his left using his thought, too. They both stop walking and turned back to each other. They walk toward the center of the room once again. The black one reaches his both hands to the center, and does the white one. This time, there is no sigh of hesitation. Their colors are being fused together bit by bit. They both look at the changes and smile to each other. After both of them turn into grayish color, they wave their hands and slowly walk a few steps backward then turn back continue walking toward the doors. They place their hands on the scanner-pads, and both doors open simultaneously. Both beings look back to each other and smile then walk through the door.
